Instructions for installing ToUcam 740K drivers on Vista, Win7, or Win10(English only...)

Important!  We added two new steps, 18 and 19, on 1 Dec 07 to be able to control the camera settings...

Here is the procedure we used to install the WinXP drivers for the ToUcam 740K on our Vista systems:

  1. Create a new directory (folder) called VistaInstallToUcam.
  2. From the original Philips installation disk, copy the following files to VistaInstallToUcam:

    Agcgauge.ax
    Camaud20.inf
    Camcom20.inf
    Camdrv20.cat
    Camdrv20.sys
    Camdrv21.cat
    Camdrv21.sys
    camext20.ax
    camext20.dll
    Camsti20.inf
    camtwn20.ds
    Camusb20.sys
    fpxlib.dll
    jpeglib.dll
    phtmphlp.htm
    toucam.vic
    toucam.voc
    VidSink.ax
    vortm.dll
    winvocon.dll

  3. From the original Philips installation disk's  MS\XP\English directory, copy the following  files to VistaInstallToUcam:

    camdsh20.inf
    camvid20.inf

  4. From your WinXP machine where the ToUcam software has been successfully installed, copy the following files from your windows installation directory (Might be called Windows, or WINNT, or whatever. Its where the system32 directory is anyway...) to  VistaInstallToUcam:

    system32\msh263.drv
    system32\sti.dll
    system32\drivers\stream.sys
    system32\drivers\USBAUDIO.sys
    system32\drivers\usbcamd2.sys
    system32\drivers\usbd.sys
    system32\drivers\usbhub.sys
    Help\740audpp.gif
    Help\740campp.gif
    Help\740imgpp.gif
    Help\740pphlp.htm

  5. Plug in the ToUcam.
  6. A "Found New Hardware" window will come up.  Select "Locate and install driver software"
  7. IMPORTANT! Cancel this window!!!
  8. Go to Control Panel - System - Device Manager.
  9. You will see, under "Other devices" an "Unknown
    device". That is the ToUcam...
  10. Right-click "Unknown device" then choose "Update Driver Software..."
  11. An "Update Driver Software" window will come up.  Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
  12. Browse... to the VistaInstallToUcam directory. Make sure "include subfolders" is checked (shouldn't matter but that's what I'm doing...)
  13. Choose "Next".
  14. Window should say "Installing driver software".
  15. System will complain about not being able to verify the publisher. Choose "Install this driver software anyway."
  16. After some delay, a window will come up and say "Windows has successfully updated your driver software". Your camera should now be working.
  17. You might have to run through the same procedure starting at step 9 and look under "Sound, video and game controllers" to get the audio subsystem installed.

    NEW!
  18.  Copy VistaInstallToUcam/camext20.ax to the system32 directory.
(Added on 1 December 07 when we suddenly realized we could not
display the camera "Properties", i.e., "settings" window
in HandyAvi!) You need to be able to display the camera
properties to set the brightness, contrast, frame rate, etc.
This file apparently controls all that.

    NEW!

  19. Now, the Camext20.ax file needs to be "registered". I don't know
why regsvr32 cannot do the job but you should open a command
window with administrator privileges (Click on Start, go to
    Programs -> Accessories
, right click on Command Prompt
and choose Run as administrator), change directory to the
VistaInstallToUcam directory and run the following command:

    rundll32 advpack.dll, LaunchINFSection camdsh20.inf, phdsext.registration.740

This runs the [phdsext.registration.740] section of the camdsh20.inf
file. We have the ToUcam 740 working properly with HandyAvi now on two
of our Vista machines here. (There may be an easier way to do
all of this now that we have discovered how to use rundll32?)

If anything went wrong (you accidentally let the system try to locate its own set of drivers instead of paying attention to step 7 for example), then, in the Device Manager, under "Imaging devices", right click the ToUcam or Unknown device and select "Uninstall". Similarly under Sound, video and game controllers". Then unplug the camera from the USB port, wait a moment, then plug it back in. You then will be at step 6 above, ready to try again and get  it right.  :-)

Worked for us. No guarantees. You assume all risk.

(Seems better though than trying to update the firmware in the camera to SPC900 which is an alternative. If anything goes wrong during a firmware download, there is often nothing you can do.)
